Not reyt good at geography, are they ?

Loads of Big, I Hate International Breaks, Blades trying to pretend they don't know where the BLUT is....
Love it

International football is OK in the summer when we have fuck all else to do. In the season it's a pain in the arse. This cup BS they have created is like a pre season tournament, it's awful and desperate as UEFA know qualification games are in general a waste of time. Stop ruining weekends UEFA with this crap.

Wrong...
But, sort of right. Two Top Teams. At one each. Both needing to win to make all the magic happen. That's desperate. What a day. But, I understand many of you need to pretend you can't wait another moment to listen to Utd on Radio Sheffield. That's how modern football works.

Agree. Didn't play today though. Unless my diary is wrong. I'm AND England not OR England.
12 Nov SUFC U21 away at Staveley
14 Nov SUFC U19 home to Worksop Town
Tomorrow 19 Nov SUFC U23 away at Bolton (Lancashire County FA, Leyland)
21 Nov SUFC U21 home to Retford
Plenty of SUFC games for us Big Blades. Get on the programme....
Up The England

Watching the 2nd half of the England match actually made me change my mind about this tournament, what before would have been played out to a meaningless draw was actually contested by both teams and made for a bit more of a spectacle. Can’t be a bad thing that the games have something riding on them, even it’s a rather contrived “something”.

derekacorah thanks for that insight. I'm a committed England fan & I do view things rather simply. Have a tournament, trophy & medals & the right to call yourselves "the winners". Have some jeopardy & consequence - relegation. And you've got a basis for better games of football. The Nations League format is far from perfect. Groups of three, playing just four games each, does not give a true meritocracy that larger groups would (for eg). But, it's a step in the right direction. And a vast improvement on "friendly internationals". And, remember, there's no increase in the number of games. The Nations League REPLACES friendlies. And, doesn't interfere too much with the existing EURO & World Cup arrangements.
However, I am intrigued by what you mean when you say it's a contrived something. I'm genuinely interested in why you think it's contrived.

Thanks Phil, I think rather than “contrived” I mean that the meaning of the competition (being brand new) is actually not that much at all and has been dreamed up to try and make these games have some meaning.

As I said, I’m now fully bought into it and agree that it’s much better than the playing of additional meaningless friendlies.

That said, if I were a Scotland fan I’m not sure I’d be that bothered. At least England are playing for something a bit more meaningful than not having to play Albania again.

derekacorah Thanks. I'd assume that lots of people would be naturally sceptical about any new tournament that UEFA have dreamt up. "All about the money" etc. So, I do understand comments about "contrived" etc. But, at root it remains a simple like v like, win your games, win your medals competition. Despite UEFA, I'm a big fan.
By winning our group, England have qualified for the Final Four in 2019, stayed in the Big Boys Top Division for 2021, guaranteed to be one of the ten top seeds in EURO 2020 Qualifying, guaranteed a smaller five team Qualifying group in EURO 2020 Qualifying and we even have a back door route to EURO 2020 Qualification if we stuff up the group. (Incidentally, I DON'T agree with that last "reward". It demeans the EUROs a bit).
I may as well say - when I was born, the EUROs didn't exist. So, I understand it takes a long long time for new International Tournaments to bed in & become "a thing".

Doesn’t it also provide a ‘back door’ Euro qualification for the winners of the lower groups? So Scotland have something to play for.

I much prefer it to the old friendlies.

The World Cup meant little in England when it first started, we had no interest.

Same here. I enjoyed the commitment shown by both teams.
I've been reading up about this tournament, but one thing is still not clear to me...If England "win" the Nations League Tournament in June (I think), will it also gain them automatic entry to the 2020 [?] Euros? Edit: Just seen the reply above from Ball_Sup (Phil) . Thanks

HighfieldBlade We're on the same page aren't we? Nations League winners in June 2019 are just that, Nations League Winners. It gives you bragging rights & better seeding for the normal 2020 ten groups of 5 or 6 teams, play each other home & away March, June, September, October, November 2019, top two qualify groups, to give 20 EURO 2020 qualified teams.
The last four EURO 2020 places will go to this mad, compromise, back door, if you don't get through your group, shit....
