If you have your ST on your phone and cant make it can you transfer it to anybody or do they have to be registered to the club and on your Friends and Family list
I logged into my mates phone on my account. We now both get tickets downloaded for each game. If I can’t go I let him know and he goes on my season ticket on his phone.
 
Coming up to crunch time for me this time.

Any significant increase in price will see me bow out, having had a season ticket for 38 of the last 41 seasons, the only exceptions being my first three years in Maidenhead back in the mid 90s.

It's not just the cost, it's a whole combination of contributing factors.

Yesterday afternoon I went for a meal locally with the wife before catching the 16.38 from Leeds to Sheffield, which is my usual night match routine. I then meet up with my mates at the Rutty for a few beers before the game. During my meal I said to the wife "I'm not sure that I can be bothered going tonight"

The reason was twofold. Most of my mates are working people that have to travel to Sheffield for games and I knew yesterday afternoon that I was going to be the only one at the Rutty as the rest were either driving and would be too late for the pub, or couldn't make it at all because of work of family commitments, or understandably just weren't willing to undertake a two hour drive home after a night game.

The other reason, the 8pm kick off. I have to make a connection in Leeds after the game, and that necessitates me catching the 22.18 train back and it's a long hobble to the station for a guy with one ankle joint and two knackered knees.

Back to the other contributing factors in my thought process.

I really enjoy my Saturdays out with all those that were missing last night and I don't really mind whether we kick off at 12.30, 15.00 or 17.730 but this season we will have had 10/23 Saturday home games, taking into account the early kick off for the last game of the season against Blackburn.

On the basis of the above I'm far from certain that I will renew even though I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford to do it comfortably.

I feel that with my age, and less than half the fixtures being conveniently timed, I may just have reached the tipping point where I say enough is enough.
The beauty of the Lane is that if you give up your ST , the walk-up seats in the BLUT offer an end-on view of the game not bettered in any stadium I've ever visited.
The downside is that if your mates currently sit next to you in your ST seat , you lose the enjoyment of sitting next to them.
That said , although I sit next to 3 lifelong friends in our 4 ST seats , I find I hardly have chance to speak much to them during the match - the main chat is pre-game lunch & pint in the pub and post- game cuppa.
And if your mates are willing , they can occasionally swap to the BLUT to be with you.
 
The card system will be the more antiquated of the two. Plus they are running two systems. The card one for less and less people.
The charge is a deterrent I'm sure. I bet there will be quite a big cost of keeping the card one going, and they want people on NFC.
They should give in-person help to people who can't install it for whatever reason though.
The card uses NFC and it's the same reader as that used for phones. In both cases all they're doing is communicating an ID number. Can't see any reason why supporting cards as well should cost the club anything at all on an ongoing basis (as opposed to a mobile app the club may need to pay to maintain). The only cost comes from printing new cards, but nobody is complaining about paying that cost if it were only charged for lost/damaged cards.

I agree with Maidenhead that it's an unfair tax on the less technologically-able, and while I don't fall into that category I hate the idea of having to install another app on my phone, but I think cooperblade is probably correct that it's the Premier League's fault more than United's.

Think it probably plays into the club's thinking that from 26/27, in the Premier League at least, plastic cards aren't going to be an option so it's better to get everyone moved over now.

 
The fella who invented the contactless technology used in NFC, and used for season tickets on your phone, was born in 1921. But. You know. Old people....
Slightly misleading stat though, he was under 50 when he developed the technology and a little older when he patented it.
 
It's hardly profiteering. How much do you reckon they're making out of it? Using price to disincentivise customers away from antiquated and more costly methods of entry is a completely legitimate approach to encourage further adoption of the preferred method.

I'm sure many people have said that the cards and phones use exactly the same technology.
 
That's one way of closing the gap between ST and match day pricing. :eek:

Works out at only approx. £26 & £22 in the Championship which still looks cheap compared to our high walk up prices but doesn't compare very well at all, given it's a season ticket commitment, to what we mostly pay for away tickets - mostly around £30.

Not sure that £100 increase (ish) per person would be the cleverest move to raise an extra circa £2 million per annum.

The real tragedy in all of this will be when paper away tickets disappear. I've got a photo album and a shoebox full of away tickets dating back to the 80s.
It's happening now. We went to QPR and that was e-ticket. We don't get to many away this season, Because of points. Ones we have have been paper, this was our first away eTicket, not sure how many others have gone that way.

Yeah readers can read both systems, and will for a long time as people use cards for other stuff. Just saying the thing in the card and thing in the card is different tech and operate very differently.
I think club will want cards phased out, so they don't have to manage the card side. They'll need a secure provider of them and it'll cost money, plus the future stuff off re-selling, identifying users etc.
 
The real reason that they seek to make us transition to phones is their desire to have a digital record of everybody who is in the ground - no other reason.
If you transfer your ticket on the phone, it is to a named recipient ( in theory). If you lend somebody your card, the club doesn't know who this is.
The perceived security benefits of this are worthless in my opinion, unless you are going to run a pre-match search on every digitally listed individual scheduled to attend.
If somebody causes trouble in the ground on the day, they will be nicked, through a combination of cctv and coppering.
If they want to go through with this exercise, then fair enough. But just make clear the deadline by which we need to comply, and leave us to it. Fining people £15 to keep using their cards before their mandatory withdrawal is just taking the piss.
 
Was so much easier when it was broken down into ten payments. I was happy to pay the interest if it meant paying it off in smaller chunks, and it was paid up by Christmas.

50/50 about renewal.
 
Is it just me not seeing the option to select a physical card when trying to renew online?
