Why can’t we play 4 at the back?

It wasn't a back four until the 78th minute.
You must have not turned on the second half. It was clearly a back 4 we normally turn to a back 4 when chasing. We just did it earlier than usual with the substitution of Mcburnie for Norwood.

I'll post some evidence later.

Formations don't describe the whereabouts of every player in every situation. To determine a team's formation I recommend looking at how the players line up for long goal kicks, especially the opposition's goal kicks, but also their own. For goal kicks there's an element of uncertainty about where the ball is going to drop, so it can be a good idea for the team to stay roughly in the shape of their formation.

Obviously there may be runs made, runs to track, headers to challenge for, so you can't always be sure, but often it'll tell you what the management have instructed. You can also look at how a team sets up when the opposition starts building attacks. But a lot of teams press high in these situations, marking individual players, trying to prevent them from building from the back, and then you can be mislead.

Anyway, the first photo, 10 minutes into the second half, a long goal kick by their keeper:

This is 3-4-1-2 with Bogle and Stevens in deep wing back positions. Fleck and Lundstram holding midfield with McGoldrick as the number 10 behind McBurnie and Brewster.

61 minutes: Still 3-4-1-2. This is a long ball from Ramsdale. Mousset has come on for McGoldrick and joined Brewster up front. McBurnie has dropped to the number 10 role. Bogle and Stevens still wing backs. We kept this shape when Sharp came on for Brewster (68 mins).

78 minutes: Change to a 4-4-2 diamond. Seconds before Bogle can be seen turning towards the bench, getting instructions. So the image isn't from a goal kick or similar, but it's immediately after the instruction's been given, and naturally the players shapes up as told when we start the attack. We have a back four, Bogle appears in a more central position (RCM) to the right of the deeper Lundstram, while Fleck goes to LCM. McBurnie continues as a number 10 in front of them. Sharp partners Mousset up front.
