Obviously we are down but I'd like to try not finish rock bottom and get more than the current list of worst PL points totals. Can only see us picking up points in the three home games against Brighton, Palace and Burnley.

1. Derby (07/08) – 11

2. Sunderland (05/06) – 15

3. Huddersfield (18/19) – 16

4. Aston Villa (15/16) – 17

5. Sunderland (02/03) – 19

6. Portsmouth (09/10) – 19

Even 20 points seems like a pipe dream at this stage.

We surpassed that total after 16 games last season btw.

The Premier League (or Carling Premiership as it was initially called) may have only existed since 1992-3, but there was still a top tier of English football for 100 years prior to that!

In the 1984-5 season Stoke City finished bottom with 17 points and that was in a 42 game season.

And assume we don’t.

World stop spinning ?

Sun stop shining ??

Relegated is relegated. The rest is background noise !!!!

UTB
Not sure the way things have gone and been handled this season can really be dismissed as “background noise”.

Depends on wether you want to “Dwell” on it, or if you are raring to go again next year.

Cup half something or other 😀.

UTB
True and there is no point doing that - but ideally a good few lessons will be taken on board from what this season has become.

I only knew Derby's total. Quite shocking some of the others. One more point and we can be a surprising stat that nobody knew because they only remember Derby.

For it's first season it didn't have a sponsor.

It was just called the FA Premier League.

Does it matter ?

If we make it to 20 points some smart arse will only make a table of worst 7 teams in the Premier League.

Just like the media think it's clever to use the 20 defeats in 25 games, worst ever team blah, blah, blah

How can we be the worst ever team when we equalled Derby's record after 22 games.

If Man Utd lost their first game of next season 6-0 would that make them the worst team in history to have ever played the game, after one game.

The media are fucking hysterical arseholes who don't have to do anything at all apart from create total bullshit and sensationalism due to the complete lack of brain cells of the general public today.

What a post this is. 👏👏👏👏

Maybe we will get to 20 points?
Who knows, some might consider that a success!
With that in mind, we could then extend some contracts as a reward.
Any suggestions?

This season is over anyway for me. I don't care what the points total is. I just hope next seasons planning is already happening, and on day one of pre-season we are more prepared and ready to go than when we've ever been.

Based on all football from 1950 onwards (and a combination of PPG and goals per game metrics), these are the worst 10 top division teams of all time (in order, worst first)

This is United now, and extrapolated out across the season

Sheffield United 20/212532201541-2611
Extrapolated3853302362-3918

Comfortably the best defence from that group but one of the worst attacking outputs in 70 years (1,525 teams have competed in that time, 0.605 goals per game would be 1,520th in that list). I'd have to re-run it but I'm fairly confident this team comes in somewhere around 6th or 7th in the worst team list.

On the bright side that pushes 75/76 United out of the top 10 😂

I remember that Stoke team. Very bad. They beat the Pigs in the 3rd game, Man U on Boxing Day, and Arsenal in February. We beat them on the first day of the season after.

One question - way aren't Sunderlands 15 and 19 point efforts on that list?

Good defensive records (comparatively). Which may well keep this United team out of the top 10?

You've pointed something out that I'd need to refine. Giving the same weight to the rankings for goals scored, goals conceded and points is probably not the right way to do it. Should give more credence to the points

Also they scored 26 both seasons

2019 Fulham, to give one example, were objectively a far better side than either Sunderland team I think. The way you’ve done it distorts this.

Worst 10 teams purely on PPG. United would be currently be 5th on this list (0.44 ppg)

That’s a fairer reflection IMHO.

That was QPRs first top flight season. They went up 2 years in a row and won the league cup as a third tier side. They came up too quick.

Wolves 1983-4 was a pretty crap side. 5 wins from memory. That season was forgotten after Stoke the year after.

Except each place is worth a lot of money to assist in rebuilding
Good point.

But not the one being discussed here 😀.

18th to 20th is relegated. Not sure the 18th placed club takes great comfort from not being 19th or 20th !!

UTB.
