Why pay him up? Is he toxic? I don’t get all this ‘pay him up’ stuff. As it stands, we’re obliged to honour his contract so we have to pay him in full to get rid. The only way that will change is if he can find another club and we can do a deal to pay him, say 60% of what we owe him, which he might accept. If he was offered a really good contract then he might even just agree to cancel his contract for nothing but I don’t think it’s likely because he won’t get anything better than a short contract from a lower league club.
So, if we have to pay up his full contract to get rid, how does that benefit us? If anything, it messes with our cash flow. We’d be better off loaning him out to a club that would pay 10% of his wages than paying him off in full.
Getting an ageing asset with little resale value off the balance sheet asap. Accounting basics...
To flip your argument on its head - why have him around? Even feeding him in the player canteen and washing his kit is incurring costs we don't need...
