Despite the recent upturn in form and the team showing some fight, escaping relegation is still looking highly unlikely, and so inspired by the recent Athletic article I thought it would be good to track the small steps to some sort of redemption and positioning ourselves as best as possible for next season regardless of the league we're in. Below is a little mini-league of the 'dire dozen' aka the worst points totals in the Premier League. Last night was the first milestone, avoiding being the sole worst team by drawing level with Derby. Next target is eclipsing that, followed by the 15 points Sunderland obtained in 05-06. Ultimately the target (and the only one that really matters) is avoiding relegation, but with that being such a herculean task (and unlikely) thought it would be nice to tick off some small victories by hopefully moving up this list!

All I was bothered about was beating Derby's unwanted record. It doesnt bother me one bit about us having the worst start in Premier League history, it's what happens over the full season that counts.

Would love to stay up though and be known for the greatest escape EVER!

A month ago I would have been delighted if we had got 20 points, now I'm hoping for mid twentys

First thing is to get another point and move above Derby's total.

After that, beating the 21 Norwich got last season would be a big psychological boost (for me, anyway!) because of our little rivalry with them over the last few seasons and because they're doing quite nicely in Championship this year and it would make me more confident in our prospects after relegation.

I think we've already got the greatest escape ever in 90-91

First win came after 17 games
During that season we won 8 games on the bounce.

We could do with that now

I'm surprised how little that is mentioned anywhere. It was a truly remarkable escape, and we finished comfortably in mid-table. As bath_blade says above, probably because it was before football was invented

Exactly
People are bleeding hysterical morons, the only opinions they have is what the media put in their moronic minds.

If Man Utd lose their opening game next season 5-0 that would make them the worst ever Premier League team according to these morons.

It's very kind of you to credit me but it should be Bath Blade. He's the knowledgeable one. :)

p.s. It's all in the underscore or lack of one.

Now is one of you in Bath, and the other in the bath?
Just speaking for myself, I could both be doing both ... scrubbing my back in the bath in Bath - which has been known. My own bath, that is, otherwise that would be a little bit weird.

Although there was a case down here not long ago where it was reported that someone broke into a house and whilst there cooked a meal and did the washing up. So using someone else's bath may not be that high on the weird list.

Well we haven't moved up the Dire Dozen table but at least we're now officially not the joint-worst side ever. One more point to move up to third from bottom!

Now won more games than the Villa side that were relegated, still think we can move up and out of these 12.

If we finish as the 13th worse then someone will probably pull up a 'terrible 20' table or something.

Anything around 20 points, considering where we were a few months ago, will be ok, even if dire for a season overall.

On a points per game basis we're on track for 19-20 points. I'll be honest, all I want now is to beat Norwich's total from last season. Our form from the last 10 is 1.2ppg which would give us another 13 points for the rest of the season - enough to pull us clear of everyone on the table above.

Was it you I had the wager about the Norwich points total with?! My mind is blank.

I really want to beat 21 points just so they can't bang on about us being shitter than them.

I think we can beat all 3 Sunderland entries.

At what point in the season did you become only bothered about beating Derby’s total?

Woop Woop! Joint 4th bottom! ;)

Maybe it'd be nice to get 18 or 20 points on the account of no team finishing on that amount of points yet! 😬

If we could get a few more points and at least get close to what Norwich got last season it wouldn't be so bad.
