Someone will have the stats but we must be one of the poorest sides as measured by corners/free kicks leading directly to goals? We mullered Brighton today but it almost looked as if they were happy to concede corners as we never looked like like scoring from one. I can’t recall a single header going goalwards. Not sure if it’s our delivery - doubtful - we’ve got some big athletic lads in the team but they seem incapable of meeting a ball with power?

Considering half their team were orcs standing almost 7ft tall, it's hardly a surprise we werent a threat and then ended up conceding from set piece.

Burn was the biggest fucker I've seen at the Lane for ages but jees he was shite.

And people say the PL is sophisticated...

Fair comment about today but Im still perplexed by the trend across the season?

The closest we've come to scoring directly from a corner was Egans goal that was ruled out as it hit his hand as he bungled it.
Not a single goal has been scored directly from a corner all season.

In terms of attacking aerial threats we're not great. O'Connell and Egan are strong, but are usually marked by players who are bigger than them. McBurnie is a good header, but isn't the strongest physically. Basham's heading technique isn't great and Berge has never made enough of his height.

So, not counting goals that come from short corners like today, and presumably not counting the one vs. Palace, or the one from Sharp last week, I think it's fair to say we never score from corners.
So is that three of the last four goals from corners?

Should we be more worried that we mostly score from corners and not enough from other sources?

So, in the interest of evidence based discussion, I’ve done some research.
PL season 18/19
3.7% of corners resulted in a goal
Liverpool scored 14 @ 5.6%
Huddersfield scored 4 @ 2.4%
Total goals = 146 with 246 from all set pieces.
Trend over the last 10 seasons is for more short corners and diminishing returns from set pieces.
My conclusions are:
Maybe we aren’t so much worse than anyone else?
Playing for corners is a waste of time even if it gets the crowd going
Being able to finish from chances created in open play is the optimal tactic and we have work to do there

Really does you make you wonder how the fuck we’ve made it to forty points and sixth place

Doesn't make me wonder at all. We play great football, have great leadership, have great team spirit and score more goals than we concede.

The OP just questioned how many direct goals... meaning the ball is swung in and met with a header... we have scored this season. The answer is none. The goal at Everton was an own goal and the palace one was carried over the line by the keeper.

There's no need to turn this into a fan bashing. It was just a simple question that I answered as it's something that is noticed also! UTB!!

I thought it was generally understood that a low percentage of corners actually result in a goal. I would usually agree that playing for a corner isn’t a great tactic, however with the new handball rule (plus VAR) I would suggest if you know the ball has touched your hand/arm then play for a corner, not a goal!

Fooking hell!... The ball was headed down by O'Connell first!
A goal is a goal. I don’t place any greater value on a goal being scored with a header direct from the corner kick than a goal scored from a knock down from a corner, or a header direct from a cross from a short corner.

Are you suggesting I do?... I couldn't give a shit how it goes in believe me!

I really don’t understand this thread 🤷‍♂️
It’s just a discussion about a crucial area of the game for us. We create few shooting opportunities but seem to win loads of corners - given that current state of affairs, finding a way to capitalise would seem worthy of consideration? Doesn’t mean we’re shit - clearly not but we all want to see more goals and further improvement

I would say that today clearly showed that we have been looking at a different approach to corners, the goal being a prime example! I don't remember us taking that many short corners this season, but today Norwood especially made himself available on Fleck's side. Fleck wondered over to Norwood's side a few times, so to suggest that we're not already thinking about corners is probably a bit ridiculous tbh.

That’s great but the reality is that we’re not seeing anything much beyond lofting into the “mixer”. I’d love to see us shake it up and do things differently. Sorry if this thread is pressing buttons but dominating possession without scoring ain’t going to cut it if we want to keep progressing (and that isn’t a criticism of what we have achieved, just an enthusiasm for what could come next). For now, we’re not conceding and that’s great but not a blueprint for future success. My guess is that CW was prickly tonight because he’s as frustrated as any of us and we’ll see a proven finisher brought in this summer alongside someone who can pick defences apart around the box.

I think it’s similar with free-kicks. It seems like every team we come up against has a free-kick specialist who it feels like is odds-on to score against us; I don’t think we’ve had a player like this for a long time, and I used to think I t would seem like another step forward for us to get one in the side.
However, looking into it a bit more, most free-kick takers rarely score. I think Mahrez and Wilson have scored more than anyone else in the premier league this season at 2. The most anyone’s ever got in a premier league season is 5 (Beckham I think nearly 20 years ago).
Overall, 12 clubs have scored a direct free-kick this season, so 8 haven’t.
There’s been 16 goals from direct free-kicks out of 730, so about 2% of goals scored have come this way.

So on second thoughts, maybe having a free-kick specialist wouldn’t really add that much to the team after all. We might get a couple of extra goals a season, which might (or might not) mean 2 or 3+ points. But I’ve come round to thinking it’s not that big an issue. Most direct free-kicks just don’t end up as goals.
