Chatting with the players last night...

My favourite was from Keiron Freeman who told me the reason he got dropped and sent out on loan was because he called Adkins a fucking dickhead to his face Got to love a man who speaks his mind!

You've solved a mystery. That was a bewildering decision, right up there with Clough sending JCR to Notts County.

Adkins must a be Marmite character - such success with some squads, complete disaster with others.

Tbf, he didn't build the teams at Southampton or Scunthorpe.
He got lucky at both clubs, only showed when he came to us.
Can't imagine how Billy Sharp has spent so long with him

To be fair, as great as it is to read some of the insights and as much as I enjoy reading it - perhaps for the players sakes some of what was said last night should stay last night.

Got a special bond between the players and the fans at the minute, the likes of which are almost not repeated anywhere else in modern football. Not saying don't say anything but maybe not direct quote players - just my opinion, not a dig.

I agree BP, my OP was meant to be a very positive comment on the players, not about gossiping. However I've got to agree with IMABLADE too about Adkins dickheadness! But thought what Freeman said goes a long way to describing just how bad the atmosphere in the dressing room last season must have been. Clearly none of the players had any respect for Adkins or his techniques and it wasn't a happy place to be, and yes, it does solve the mystery as to why Freeman suddenly disappeared like that.
This season has definitely banished all those demons and a happier, more together, more positive set of players would be hard to come across at the moment. UTB!!

No I got that flavour definitely. Just as people were asking for more goss I thought I'd play the other side as it should be about how great they were with you and not a repeat of certain things said in the moment imo - for your sake and OP as much as owt really.

Great to hear your experience though - I remember after watching a test match win 5 England cricketers came into the original oak in Leeds (Flintoff was one) and joined in songing and drinking with us fans. It was brilliant and I remember thinking you just wouldn't get that connection with footballers anymore.

Well, we seem to have it and I'd bet it isn't repeated anywhere else in the top 3 divisions - as if the attacking brand of passing football wasn’t enough!!

A truly memorable time to be a Blade.

Wouldn't mind but Fleck can't pull pints to save his life ,
but gave him a big hug as he was going out the Barrell , along with some of the other players ,
Have it on vid but haven't a fucking clue how to up load it

It's basically impossible, I just don't get it!

I met him in the casino the day after the play off game against Swindon, still drowning my sorrows, i asked him what went wrong this year, he said "fuck knows, we all told him, we needed defenders from October" absolute gent he was as well

Oh and shaking Dane Whitehouses hand in the Roebuck .

What time was Whitehouse in the Roebuck?

I feel like I narrowly missed out on bumping into current and former players. Although I did see Basham walking from London Road towards Bramall Lane with who I assumed was his family.

Before game , around 11ish I think , but time was a bit of a blur Sunday ,
Said thanks for the goal v the pigs at swillsboro , well the six minutes of the game I saw .

Fair, lucky man!

they all come accross very well in the vids. Clarke is the only one who i always wonder what he would be like in social situations as he comes across very stone faced, cold in his vids. Always calm.

Did you chat to him?

No, he was sitting with EEL at the back on a settee and surrounded by quite few blokes who I assume we're his mates and did come across as a bit inaccessible. Got a photo with him later on though. He was wearing a rather unusual trouser and very long jumper combo which he seemed to be having a bit of an issue with. So I said, quote, "come on Leon, stop faffing with your dress and have a photo with us". :Dthis is because I am so cool ha ha ha. Anyway, he obliged!!!

I spoke to Clarke about 6 weeks ago in the Superdrug at the train station. It was around 8am and he will have been on his way to Shirecliffe. It was a bit weird because I am not one for approaching anyone who is 'famous', especially when sober but we kind of bumped into each other at the end of an aisle. I was checking my phone for something and when I looked up there he was with a basket, both of us were kind of in each others way. I don't know why but I said 'how's the foot?' and he replied 'sorted now, just got back to training'. I then waxed lyrical about the season, from my point of view to which he replied 'if I can get a start or 2 I should score in this team'. I thought that was a cool thing to say, confident in himself but complementing the other lads as well.

Have to say he came across as a nice lad. The bloke behind the till recognised him as well and asked him loads of stuff, he was sound with it all and was really polite before bobbing off towards the taxi rank.

Oh and just to add, I purchased a gentleman's comb, didn't quite see what he had in his basket but there was a lot of stuff.

Seen Freeman twice in the station as well. Both times in a hoody and baseball cap, head down. Think he is the type who prefers to go unnoticed.

Clarke just seems like a fairly shy and quiet bloke. Nothing wrong with that. We forget that our idols are just the same as us really don't we? Scougs made us laugh though, the total opposite, never shuts up! Pity I couldn't understand barely a word of what he was saying! ;-)

Think he's just trying to avoid stalkers at the railway station like you mate! Why don't you get yourself a little book and write down some engine numbers instead?

Nice one ,yet already 24 hours we have achieved what we have the knives are out for some players :(

Believe me, train stations are not somewhere I enjoy being but ordinarily my job requires that I travel to London and/or Leeds a couple of times per month. It's a pain in the arse if truth be told.

Not the same since the Peaks went (late 1980's).... ooh er showing my gricing tendencies. Magic motors though 2500hp going up the Settle & Carlisle, beautiful scenery, great British engineering. Just like Sheffield United actually. :)

Well just think how much better that travelling would be if you took up CB's suggestion and bought that little book!

I was in barrel when players came in,fucking brilliant to see them mixing with fans,I shook their hands and thanked them for what they've done for our club this year, top lads,United from top to bottom.

Not seen that but I hope the genuine openness of this set of players is reciprocated by more support and encouragement from the crowd next season. Having witnessed the lap of shame last year I don't want to lose what we have now.

Best group since Bassett. Let's keep it going when they hit tougher times next season.

Peak bashing. Oh dear. I did have the last locohauled out of St Pancras before Eurostar took over. 45112 St Pancras - St Pancras via Corby and then 47355 St Pancras - Derby. Not the same as some Napier action out of KX it has to be said.

Can't beat a 55.

'Nick it' is for the likes of Blackwell and Morgan. Tufty will want to win it in style.

To be fair, the man who epitomised “nick it” was funny little Nigel. More so than the two you mention. Though I do agree with the sentiment that Wilder has had a rather different approach. He has had us playing like what we are. A club too big for league 1. I hope we continue to seek to dominate teams in the same way next season in the championship.

Clarke’s a bit of an odd one. If you watch the celebrations when we won the title and on Sunday, he always seems to separate himself slightly from the group. He seems to always want personal space and be uncomfortable in the middle of the crowd. Seems like he’s socially awkward.

The Morgan one comes directly from old Nowt-Fancy himself. After playing for a draw at Mighty Yeovil he claimed we'd gone there to 'keep it tight and hope to nick one'.

Such creative genius. How can it be that every team he coaches gets relegated? One of the great mysteries of our time.
