What we don't have & must get.

Watching the Man. City game earlier l reckon we’re stitched on to sign Rodrigo. He looked a clown so would fit our current midfield superbly. I don’t think he knew he had an elbow.....

A genuine Basham successor who can push him from the moment he arrives and take over from him soon. If we fail to address this as a matter of urgency then a situation will arise where Basham’s legs go and we’re all sat around wondering why he suddenly looks half the player he was and wondering what to do about it.

Wasting limited resources on a Basham successor right now would be as pointless as signing a replacement for Baldock back in the summer. Better to replace the crap that already do look half the players they used to be.

Emi Buendia, Ivan Toney, Troy Deeney, Ben Foster, Mo Besic, Matty Cash, Antonee Robinson, John Swift...oops, that was my summer list.

If we’re persisting with 5 at the back, then we need:
  • a genuine option for LCB - tough because it’s such a specialist role, but we’ve tried the square pegs and the round hole has not been filled.
  • a number 10 to bridge the gap between midfield and the isolated attack.
  • Sadly, a defensive midfielder who can pass a ball and has high energy/work rate. Have loved Norwood, but the yard of pace he seems to have lost is costing us.

The frustrating thing for me is that the players I have highlighted in bold above were all probably gettable in the summer with the amount we spent elsewhere and all would have been better than we have seen this season.

I get Rammers is at the start of his career and Foster at the end but there was a good couple of years left in Foster still and he was very good last season.

The value Buendia would have brought to the team has been done to death on here so no further comment needed really.

Toney would have been far cheaper overall than Brewster and on current form far better as well.

Besic we know all about and I feel he would have been a good option based on how bad our midfield was after the 1st lockdown ended.

The one I wasn't so sure on is Deeney but IMO his power and experience up top would have been an asset.

Has anyone mentioned either points or goals yet? We could do with some of those.

We lack Premier League experience and character/leaders on the pitch - that’s why I wanted Deeney/Foster short term. We’ve spent a lot of money on youth and overlooked the value of experience and proven quality.

I get why we went down the youth route as it plans for the long term but we have paid through the roof for them.

For me this season was about establishing us in The Prem and a more short term view was needed IMO.

As always, you need to strike a balance between youth and experience. I suspect the wage structure was the obstacle to bringing in experienced Premier League players, but when you’re spending north of £20mil on unproven youth maybe you need to show a bit more flexibility in your recruitment strategy.

So... I'm taking it as read that we will be relegated this season, so don't need further discussion of that on this thread.
Also that Wilder in Wilder out is being discussed ad. infinitum elsewhere, so theres no need to discuss that here either.

The question is; What do we fans see as the biggest keys to improving the current team?
Let's say you can have up to three things..

I'll go first...
1 A pacy player who will run at defenders, can sometimes beat a man, and/or "win" free kicks around the box. (Hate the phrase win free kicks but everyone does it to us).

2 A consistently sound player in his own position who can also regularly take dangerous free kicks.

3 A consistently sound player in his own position who has leadership qualities that can drive others on to compete for every ball and never give in. (A Morgs/Vinny Jones/Roy Keane type attitude).

What else do we need?
We need the owner to come up with some wealthy shareholders who can fund the purchase and wages of the players Wilder wanted but got snapped up by Aston Villa. Or a couple of upcoming or foreign gems not on the radar of Leeds, Villa etc and who don't have a greedy agent playing us off against the rest of the Prem. Goalkeeper, a couple of defenders and 3 or 4 midfield dynamos and no 10 flair. Whoever makes the grade needs to stay fit for 90 minutes.

need at least 3/4 pace quality players but can't see it happening

Those suggesting guys like Troy Deeney, and complaining about £20 million being spent on youth players, don't understand the clubs Wage Structure.

The Club isn't paying Premier League wages.
So you can't sign these 'Experienced Premier League Players'.

The Club can't afford Lundstram's demands, but can suddenly find £60-80k a week to pay Troy Deeney......Before even considering the transfer fee.

A centre-back plus midfielders who have a spark of creativity.

We need a couple of athletic players that can get round the pitch and compete. Too many of our players look like they are on the decline and towing a caravan.

I re-watched the Chelsea match from July (the 3-0 win) the other day, and couldn't believe how fast our players looked. Every time a Chelsea player got the ball, we had two or three men immediately swarming around them. When we won the ball, we'd have men immediately flying into empty space, looking to receive a pass. It was incredible seeing such a difference in the same set of players.

3 new midfielders

And a keeper, 2 new strikers and a few defenders. That should cover it.
If we had even an half way competent midfield, they’d create more chances for our strikers and offer more protection to our beleaguered defence and keeper.

Difficult when we average 35% possession though. Last season the defence was the rock that we knicked results from. That's the difference this season.
