Finally, Sheffield United got a victory after a difficult start to the season as they secured three points with a hard fought comeback victory against Oxford United. Another difficult start at the Lane saw United behind as Kane Hemmings scored but the Blades fought back and goals from Billy Sharp and James Wilson saw the home side gain a deserved victory in the end.

Manager Wilder opted to change things at both ends with Jake Wright coming in for Jake O’Connell and Matt Done coming in for Leon Clarke.

The game began with Basham cautioned for a late challenge on Dunkley in a competitive start. Oxford had the opening chances with a low shot from Maguire saved from Moore and then the same man shooting into the side netting. United had struggled to get going and the crowd started to become frustrated. Sharp nearly played in Done and Duffy nearly forged an opening but United had another player in referee Kinseley’s notebook with Wright this time being carded for going in late.

From the resultant free kick Oxford took the lead. As they have much of the time this season the defence stood off allowing a shot from outside the box from Sercombe from a quick free kick. The shot had power and Moore pushed away but as with Long in the previous game it was pushed out centrally and no United player reacted. HEMMING did and was onto it quickly to turn the ball home over the diving keeper. The groans from the home side predictably came. It was another remarkably soft goal to concede.

United tried to respond and had a few set plays and then a decent move saw Done play in Freeman but keeper Eastwood and Dunkley managed to block it away. Soon after Done shot over and then the same man got in and was able to turn a shot towards goal from Scougall’s poked ball but Eastwood spread himself well. At least the home side had forced the keeper into two saves and had shown some penetration in an otherwise poor first half performance.

The remaining 5 minutes were played out without chances or incident and the half time whistle came with more frustration than out and out criticism from the home fans at the lowly Blades trooped off. Manager Wilder opted to make a change taking off Hussey and bringing on O’Connell who went in at left back.

United tried to forge an opening. Scougall and Done were working hard and the former forged an opening for the cross to come over but Ruffels errant header was held by Eastwood. At the other end Oxford had a break but Lundstram’s effort was saved from Moore.

United were toiling but struggling to create much. Done summed things up with more industry after a Dunkley mistake but his shot lacked power and Eastwood smothered. However, Done was involved not long after in the equaliser.

The original ball forward saw a challenge from Sharp and as the visitors appealed for a free kick the ball ran loose to Done who got wide and put over an inviting cross that SHARP got on the end of it to steal in and convert from close range. The U’s appeals continued in vain up to the restart but United were back on level terms and the volume ramped up from the home crowd who sensed a turning point in the game and the season.

United were now firmly on the front foot. Done and Sharp combined but the ball was cleared. They won two corners in a row and Oxford were struggling to get out. It was not scintillating stuff from the home side but sheer effort and bodies saw the U’s now hanging on. However, they could not hang on and from a set play, the Blades took the lead.

It came from a free kick on the right. Duffy swung it in and WILSON powered in a header that gave Eastwood no chance. Wild celebrations ensued at the Kop end ensued to signal the vital breakthrough as the crowd noise went up another notch.

United now had something to hold onto and were now fighting for every loose ball but as seems inevitable they started to sit back and Oxford had a spell with Maguire having an effort that Moore saved.

Scougall has put a lot of effort into the game and he was now struggling and after a series of treatments he was replaced by Fleck.

Both Sharp and Done had ran themselves into the ground but it was Sharp who made way for Clarke as United looked to run the clock down as the game entered the final five minutes. United managed to do enough to restrict chances for the visitors and a late free kick from Maguire that came to nothing was all that they could muster. The game entered an additional four minutes of stoppage time but most of this was played in the Oxford half as the Blades professionally saw out time. The thumbs up from Chris Wilder at the end signalled relief as much as anything as United he finally had that winning feeling as the Blades manager.

United – A win. Finally. We were not great an at times looked like we did not have much of an idea how to break Oxford down; a relatively poor side. However through sheer effort and application alone we slowly hauled ourselves back into the game. Done and Scougall summed us up today. Not great on the ball but just ran around a lot, chased lost causes, forced mistakes and ultimately the former made the vital first. After this they sat back and invited pressure and we got the winner with a decent cross (finally) and a great header. I felt it was a deserved win. They had a few half chances but nothing major really and even the goal came out of nothing. Still they had something to defend and you feared the worst when we went one down. The crowd could have really turned but stayed with the side relatively and appreciated some of the above players’ efforts. I felt it was more of a United effort in the way they toiled and they seemed more together second half. At times the team does seem to be unclear on how they are meant to be playing in terms of going long, short or playing through midfield. Today was a bit of a mixed bag. We still went too long at times when Sharp and Done of course would struggle with high pumped up balls.

Formation wide it may have been a 4-2-3-1 as Done and Sharp alternated as lone striker and certainly in the middle we had Basham and Coutts and then Scougall, Duffy and one of above as a three floating about. It was more flexible than it has been. We lacked width but at least we had much more of the ball in general play and today we actually created some chances; not loads but a few in the first half and a few in the second half. We had more than they did in that regard.

The game was won today not by great play (although Done and Duffy’s crosses were very good for the goals) but just by sheer will and not wanting to lose. We simply did not want to lose and as the game went on we won battled individuals and collectively. It was not flowing football and not great moves but just graft and gradually pinning them back. As that happened we started to get the odd chance and the goals came.

Quality wise we are still lacking. We played too much behind the defence and did not really hurt Oxford. We looked a bit clueless in terms of how to create but of course we lack pace and drive. The midfield barely get in front of the attackers with only Scougall showing some zest to run in beyond. Everything is so static and slow all over the field. We really lack leader and drive. I felt the lad Wright gave us some organisation and that Done coming in gave us some legs up top. Him and Sharp did not offer much as a goal threat (until we scored) but Done at least did not give the defence much time and forced errors, even in terms of them just knocking it out for a throw in /corner. Coutts showed he is a footballer even if most of his good work comes in areas that don’t hurt opponents. Sharp still needs to do more and I feel Duffy’s end product is still lacking. Defensively Hussey continues to look an issue and we ball watch too much (the goal saw nobody close down and nobody react to the loose ball when it came off the keeper).

We have a long way to go. As a performance it was disjointed for long spells again but I liked the fact we started to win some battles. Just the harrying and application alone warranted the win in the end against a poor side whom with better quality should have been dispatched rather easily. However, for tonight we just take the win and it is a start and gets us off the mark. We have two away games to come and have to hope we can gradually get on a run but as I have alluded to we will probably lose as many as we win with the current set up and look a very average side. Oxford will be nearer the bottom than the top and we only just eked out the win in the end. A sign that for us to compete with top sides we need to improve the personnel considerably.

Oxford – They were ok to start the game and sensed out brittle confidence. The goal they scored was quick thinking in the outset as they took a quick free kick and after the decent shot the lad got on the rebound to score. They must have sensed a result here as the other sides who have been down to the Lane in recent times. Second half they will have felt they coped with us ok and we did not create much but the leveller changed the game. They asked for a foul but it was a case of us being stronger for once and not sure there was enough in it to be given. Besides a lot happened even after the challenge and they lost Done and Sharp. After this they sat back and back and we scored from the free kick after a clumsy foul out side. They tried to come out after we scored but with less than quarter of an hour to go they had to change how they had been playing. They had a few free kicks and effort but no clear chances of note. Overall over the game for possession and chances, it was similar to Millwall last week in that United took the role of the home side and had more chances and play and did enough to win.

They did not offer much at the top with a few half chances from Maguire and Thomas did not really get in the game. The game ended up very narrow and they started to sit further and further back instead of pushing on. This proved to be their undoing although ironically had a very high line on the set play that saw the headed winner coming out too far.

Oxford have a few decent players but lost a couple of key players in the summer in O’Dowda and Roofe and look a bit light at this end of the field. Squad wise they also lack depth. I think they may just have enough to stay away from the bottom places but think they may have to look over their shoulders come season end and it would not surprise me if they get sucked into a relegation scrap. Home form will be key and they need to make sure they can get enough wins at the Kassam.

Opponent man of the match : Thought Maguire was decent on set plays and was busy but the lad Lundstram was maybe their best player as he always looked to run forward with the ball and try to move it on. He got muscled out second half as the game went on and I felt he got little help.

Opponent Weak link : Chey Dunkley. He is a highly rated centre back who had done well for the U’s but today he made a number of mistakes and often his dithering led to chances or us winning set plays.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 6.5/10 – Decent in overall play. He calls more than Long and a number of times you could hear him bellowing. Made a few saves but most you would have expected. His overall handling was fine and came off his line well on a few occasions. Kicking was poor again; for a big lad he struggles to make half way. The big question mark was the goal. Decent struck shot but again as with the criticism from Long you would want your keeper to push it away from goal. It was a much better shot than the one Long made a mess off v Rochdale but it still was pushed into the centre. Of course question marks are over the lack of closing down and the reaction to the push out but you still would want your keeper to do a bit better. Second half he had little do but made a few decent routine saves when called upon.

Freeman 6.5/10 – Bit of a mixed bag. Steady-ish but at times his fault from previous games came to the fore, namely ball watching and losing his man. He had our best effort first half with a low shot that was saved and he at least did try and get forward. I felt he was slow in terms of his defending and just seemed unaware what was happening with his man at times. No worse than Brayford though really but he has to be sharper in the defensive element. Seems to have got rid of most of his hair since last week and had a shaved look and lighter hair but still with the man bun seemingly? It took my half an hour to realise he was playing right back!

Hussey 5/10 – Does not get any better. Continued to be very slow from a defensive point of view allowing his man too much time and seemingly wanting an age to even do the most basic of things. He had a decent left foot but wants 3 or 4 touches before he can try and play his ball/cross. Seems to have no concept of where the rest of the defence is and he often is either 10 yards ahead of the other 3 or 10 yards behind them – seemingly never in line. His play on the ball was very mixed really. One shocking set play that went straight out and a few others straight at the first man. Seems a bit out of his depth. We improved after he went off even with a centre back at left back.

Wilson 7/10 – Some may have been surprised he was preferred to O’Connell but his partner has made more mistakes and by default was probably the one who was dropped. He has been steady in the games I have seen but I do feel he lacks authority and dominance and looks light weight. Today that was the case again first half as at times we allowed them to come onto us. Second half he and the rest of the defence played noticeably 5-10 yards further forward and came onto the ball more. Technically he is quite ordinary but is fairly mobile over the deck. Surprised me when he scored as aerially he has not overpowered anyone at either end so far but it was a really good header as he got in front of the defence to power the header home. Seemed to grow in confidence after this as we won the key challenges to end the game. He will never be commanding and unsure long term he will be a starter but today did ok.

Wright 7/10- Some have been calling for him to have a chance and duly it arrived as O’Connell missed out. He seemed to be organising the defence more than O’Connell and Wilson (at least as a unit) and he was talking a lot today. Does not seem that quick or that great in the air but seemed a steady eddy type. He did attack balls a lot and when we did not win it initially left us a bit vulnerable but at least showed some gusto. Was not really tested in terms of pace or anyone running at him as Oxford only really had one out and out striker but I felt he did alright and will deserve a run in the side now.

Basham 6.5/10 – He put a lot of effort in today and did not hide. He tried to win it, get his foot in and mop up. However once again his actual touch on the ball and passing left a lot to be desired. So often his first touch ends up leading to him having to make a tackle or stretching for the ball. He lacks pace and often seems to be treading water as he chases back. I am not his biggest fan but I felt second half he did not back down and was able to at least pick up the odd scraps as we seemed to have a lot of the midfield battle and saw a lot more of the ball. Still not the answer but today his application was fine. Both him and Coutts switched off on the free kick and neither were able to react to the quick take.

Coutts 7/10 – Out best ‘ball’ player from start to finish and maybe had more of the ball than anyone else on the field. A few times he lost the ball and sometimes his passes were intercepted but he was always looking to get on it and play it when he could. Technically he looked better than anyone else on the field with some decent passes short and long. Has lost some weight but still lacks mobility and ability to get beyond the strikers and often his best play happens in areas that do not affect the game sadly. It would be good if Basham had more pace to mop up the defensive area and allow Coutts to just play off the front (sadly though he is not much of a goal threat even there) but he plays more in front of the defence than anywhere else which means most of his passing is square and back. He seems unwilling or unable to want to shoot though and when he does get in good positions. He does show better strength than you think when he is in 50/50 challenges and I felt at times he looked a class above most of the rest of the midfield even though his good play was in areas that did not hurt the opposition. At the moment he will remain in the side until we can make some additions who offer something different.

Duffy 7/10 – Weird one as even though he fluctuated in his overall final ball still looked one of main threats on our side and I thought he tried hard today even if everything did not come off. He is a strange player in that he is a busy sort of footballer who tries to get on the ball and make things happen but all so often he has to come inside and for a winger never seems to hog the touchline but then today seemed to have been asked to play more inside. His natural instinct always seems to be to drift inside anyway! I feel all season things have not quite come off for him despite a lot of effort. He does not hide though and even when things go wrong he does at least try and win it back when he can. He seemed to improve in the second half with O’Connell behind him as he could attack more knowing he had some solidity behind him. Great free kick for the goal that we scored the winner from and one of the few quality balls we have out in all season.

Done 7/10 – His play on the ball was mixed and at times his touch let him down but today he showed something we have not had up top with real application and effort. He never stopped running to the point where he was exhausted and kept looking at the bench but they ended up taking off Scougall and Sharp before him. He ran the channels and tried to get on the end of things. He might not the be fastest but he will never stop running and I felt his attitude (along with Scougall) was the catalyst for us to get back in the game. Did he link with Sharp? Not really but then on the goal he got wide and put a good ball over that was begging to be converted.

Scougall 7/10 – For effort alone he might have been our best player even if he did not affect much when he had the ball. He put an incredible amount of effort in today. He was not brilliant on it and at times it got away from him or he made poor decisions but he seemed so determined from start to finish and actually looked like he gave a damn and cared for the shirt. Played wide but covered an awful lot of ground and seemed to be chasing all game from front to back. He fell over a lot and the challenge on the keeper when he went to the deck summed it up as we had to play with 10 for some time till he got to his feet (ref was never going to bring it back or stop play as we not a head injury). Still very weak and runs down blind alleys but he seemed very busy today. He was wide but like Duffy came inside to ensure he was involved and had some impact on play.

Sharp 6.5/10 – Mixed game really. I felt in overall play he offered less than many of the other front players and that the centre backs imposed themselves on him. First half the ball never stuck to him despite him trying to move across the front line. Done seemed to be running around much more than him and running the channels more than him. Seemed to get frustrated but as with the Rochdale game he came alive around his goal as he showed some hard work to chase the ball down and then got on the end of a cross to turn home. After this he showed more effort chasing down balls and looking like he cared. He was taken off near the end as both him and Done tired. Big vote of confidence that he was preferred to Clarke (albeit he allegedly had a knock in the week) and he got a crucial goal. Noticeable that Wilder went to him at the end and pushed him toward the Kop to take the plaudits as skipper after the win.

Subs

O’Connell 7/10 – Was dropped and then thrown in at left back when Wilder opted to replace the disappointing Hussey. He did well at left back, attacking the ball and coming onto it when he could and ensuring the wide man did not have time. Not sure he will play in that position long term but may remain there to give us more of a solid presence at left back.

Fleck – Came on for the tiring Scougall to make a three in the centre of the park as we sought to see things out. Did not get on the ball much but at this stage it was about holding positions and not letting them getting opportunities.

Clarke – Brought on for Sharp. Did not touch the ball more in the final stages but was a nuisance factor as the game came to an end.

Manager – Wilder 7/10 – Will be just delighted with the win. It was not a great performance but second half effort alone we pressed them back and did enough to win the game. It was a big test as he knows a defeat today and the pressure will have been well and truly on. At half time he was staring down a barrel once again after another game where we went behind. His half time team talk was crucial and it worked.

At the start of the game, he made some bold changes with Wright coming in and also Done for Clarke and this helped in terms of the application at both ends. We seemed a bit more organised at the back and also Done gave us some effort chasing the ball down and allowing us to play higher up the field. He made another change of note when he took off Hussey and brought O’Connell on and this allowed Fleck to be more adventurous. I felt overall his half time team talk after another flat first half saw us play higher up the field. Scougall and Done may not have been great on the ball but really put shifts in and helped crowd to get behind us. When we levelled you felt only one side would win and it proved as we got the crucial second. After this we did enough to see the game out.

He still needs 3 or 4 players in without a doubt and will look to address this in the final 3-4 days. Sadly, we are scrambling about to get these players again and will either pay over the odds or miss out. Today was great to finally get a win but make no mistake it is a side that is not going to trouble the promotion places without some big additions across the side.

Ref – Nick Kinseley was a bit mixed and actually got booed off from the home side even in a victory which is a telling side of someone who has not been great! He had no idea of the advantage rule. Three times he brought play back when we had the ball rather than let us have the ball and carry on. He was fussy throughout the game and I felt needed to let things flow generally; both ways. Basham was right to be booked for a really poor challenge early on and I cannot really dispute many of the other decisions to card people. Wright and Basham were poor challenges; the latter a good foul to stop them getting away. Both Ruffels and Hemmings were also rightly booked for cynical fouls. A few half-hearted penalty appeals for United rightly turned away. He did not have much help from his assistants who were seemingly not wanting to give decisions at all; either offsides or obvious foul throws.

Crowd – Thought it was really quiet first half as the visiting fans remarked,’ Is this a library?’ Oxford brought a decent following of maybe 1,000-1,2000 and they got behind their side and of course were more vocal early on as they led and predictably chanted ironic cheers to Wilder; ‘Sacked in the morning’ and ‘Cheer up Chrissy Wilder’ etc. After we got level they probably feared the worse as the home crowd started to become a positive influence and so it proved. After we equalised the crowd support went up and up and I felt it was very positive and helped us to get in front and see the game out. I felt whilst it was quiet the crowd were not that negative first half even when trailing and there not many boos at half time. We were almost just wanting something to happen and when we got into the game and created some chances, the Kop started to make some noise. The fans were then urging us on. It was not an intimidating partisan atmosphere as it can be, but it was far more positive than it has been and the fans were behind the team much of the second half. I felt the home crowd were supportive today and helped us to win the game. If we can somehow get in front in games and be on the front foot then we are not playing catch up both on and off the field.

Does Freeman get 6.5 for his haircut then or his game ? Would be 8 and 7 respectively for me .

Thought his hair was better than his game! No he was ball watching a lot first half and at times dithered somewhat. He had one good shot when he ought to have done better really but I felt some off their better attacks came as we allowed them to win ground down either flank. Might have been a 7 but we are splitting hairs....

I think you are being a bit harsh on Basham.
I thought he was excellent today and considering he was booked in the 1st 5min
MOM for me.

Really? Thought he was our poorest midfielder - Scougall put a lot in effort wise, ditto for Duffy and I also felt Coutts was good on the ball. Basham as always was a bits and pieces sort of performance. His first touch is appalling and he still shies away from contact. The booking shocked me as it was the opposite and was totally out of characer - he could have been sent off - it was a really bad tackle but being so early maybe saved him.

Good report Deadbat but Moore struggles to make halfway? At one point he kicked it straight to their keeper!

Must have been on my phone at that point. No, I saw a few kicks today and Millwall where he struggled to clear half way from dead and feet. If he keeps ball out then I can cope with that.

Thought his passing was good today and went into some tackles despite being booked. I agree Scougall had his best game for a long time today looked to drive forward, which is something we have been missing for ages. Still gets knocked of the ball to easily. Duffy I thought was poor today kept the ball to long and then lost it, kept turning down blind ally's, but to his credit he did keep trying, just wasn't his day.
Its all about opinions, I also think you see games slightly differently depending which stand you watch from.

At the end of the day, we just aren't that good. We can change personnel, formation, tactics, whatever, but ultimately there is not a combination of a good 11 players that we can put on that field to win us promotion. We still look shakey at the back, weak upfront and the game bypasses midfield. We certainly won't be troubling the promotion spots this season and what is more concerning, is that virtually none of Wilder's signings have made any impression/ improvement on last season.

Scougall might have had his best game for a while, but doesn't that say a lot. Still no goals scored or created. Can't fault the lad's effort but just no quality, and wouldn't be starting if we were a promotion contending side.

Added to this, we looked slightly better today WITHOUT Clarke, which is ofcourse heightening the general concern over the 3 year contract. What if we just are a better a side without him? This is probably true IMO anyway. We are lumbered with another over 30 on a 3 year deal. The club is still in a rather depressing state but at least we won, and it's all we could have done today, I suppose. We are just so depressingly average all over the field it's difficult to know where to begin to improve the team, as there is a case to be made for replacing all 11! I suspect we will still be in real danger after our next 2 tricky away games. Some drastic changes needed (which obviously won't happen now) and therefore, I do fear for CW's job in the long term.

Oh woe me ,we fucking won for god sake ,Its Saturday night and we won ,how can you be so depressed ??

Perhaps because I want to look beyond the 90mins today? Yes, we won, as I stated that's all we could do. However, we don't look a team that is capable of promotion, which I assumed what everyone's hope and expectation of this season, no?

Hope, yes. Expectation was always dependent on transfers.

Playing well comes with winning. If we had got a couple of goals early against Bolton I am sure tour start would have been a lot different.

I don't give a fuck how the wins come at this point because the performances people moan about only come with winning!

Agree that we are no better than mid table with the current squad, bar a superhuman effort from all concerned. However it is still early days and today might just help to bring the best out of them. 3-4 quality signings this week changes everything though. Big week ahead that will show us how serious the club is about promotion this season.

Great report again Deadbat !

Tend to agree with you on most points. I do tend to think that Coutts instructions are not to venture too far forward and to keep it tidy in front of the back four, which I think he did generally well. Thought both he and Basham looked a bit stronger in challenges than we've seen before and hopefully this will continue. Still a long way to go and although we could have conceded more today, we looked distinctly better 2nd half with O'Connell on the left and Wright organising in the centre.

Thought Scougs played really well and with a lot of energy, yes he gets knocked off the ball, but he also wins a lot of freekicks and we scored from one he won and at the moment set plays are our best chance of scoring. There was some good play in the 1st half when he drove forward and played a great ball to Done but unfortunately Matt wanted a touch and the shot was blocked.

One gripe I have with the whole team is that no one has a shot from outside the box. Several times, Coutts, Basham, Done and others had space to shoot but they all looked to pass or 'dink' it into the box. I know this has been a feature of our play for a couple of seasons but I really think CW need to get them having a go when they can.

Coutts looked like a player today, even showing grit and mobility.

We've signed a good keeper for me but an other who can't bloody kick!

Oh woe me ,we fucking won for god sake ,Its Saturday night and we won ,how can you be so depressed ??

He's not being depressed, just realistic. Once again, we failed to 'work' the opposition goalie in the first half. Oxford's goal came after they'd had 2 or 3 efforts immediately in the the play before they scored, and 0-2 at any stage would have been 'Goodnight Vienna'.

Unless there's marked incomings before Wednesday, that squad will see us in for a long, hard winter. We've got some tough games coming up and the grit and determination we showed yesterday will only take us so far.

I thought our improvement came when Hussey departed, Done is not physically up to being the target man (and should have been subbed 15 mins. from the end as he was knackered). We've got a massive Checkatrade Trophy match coming up on Tuesday :D (if I was remotely interested in attending, the name they've now given to the JPT would dissuade me...) but that's no criticism of Done - he was my MOM.

Still, 3 points - even against poor opposition - is welcome, but it's our 'direction of travel' that worries me and it looks like being yet another 'one step forward, two steps sideways/backwards' season. A bit like last season and a lot like our defence/midfield.

The crowd - in numbers, encouragement and patience were superb. Full marks for the Oxford fans as well. I walked away from the match with plenty of them, and they were still in good cheer. The only time when an 'incident' looked likely was when a couple stopped me to ask which was the general direction back to the train station. I pointed vaguely in the direction they needed and they said 'Is there anywhere to eat in Sheffield? The Moor?' I collapsed in laughter and we left on good terms. :)
