Former Blade Travis Binnion has outlined his blueprint for the future after being unveiled as the new head of Sheffield United’s Academy.

Binnion, the former United youngster, will replace Nick Cox, who has been headhunted by Manchester United.

United’s U21s and U18s have both enjoyed successful campaigns - the U21s joined their younger counterparts in their respective national final after an extra-time victory at Charlton yesterday - and Binnion hopes to continue the good work into the future at United’s SteelPhalt Academy base in Shirecliffe.

“The U18s and U21s have had fantastic seasons,” Binnion said.

“We’re obviously mindful that we’re here for one reason, to produce players for the first team, but winning games is never a bad habit to be in.

“The players have done superbly - Aaron Ramsdale has had international recognition with England, Shea Gordon has been involved with Northern Ireland and a few others have been close, not forgetting the likes of Louis Reed too.

“We’re well aware of what our job is, and that’s to make sure that the young players are ready to deliver when needed. We’re not naive enough, either, to think that because they’ve been with us since they were nine years old, they have the right to play for the first team. They’ve got to earn the chance, and deliver when it comes.

“We’re accountable for that. I think our young players are the best in the area, they will keep getting better and so will we. We’ll work hard to make sure that happens.”

Diego De Girolamo scored both United’s goals at The Valley, while Reed, Ben Whiteman and David Brooks have all enjoyed a taste of senior football with Nigel Adkins’ squad this season.

Kevin McCabe, United’s co-chairman, announced Binnion’s appointment at a fans’ forum with season-ticket holders at Bramall Lane.

“Travis has a fantastic reputation,” McCabe said.

“He’s a young man known well at many clubs. We’re sad to see Nick go but we have a good replacement in Travis. He’s only a young man but has a lot of experience and broad shoulders, and a desire to make us better than we already are.”

Great appointment imo.

How long has he been coaching the youngsters now?

Good luck to the fella. Fantastic opportunity for him , with big pressure to perform and produce.

UTB

Trav has also spoken very well in both of the fans forums and is passionate about doing the business for the Blades. From what I understand of his remit and involvement, has a big part to play.

Ive always had him down as an eventual first team manager one day. If someone doesnt pinch him first.

Indeed, but given that he's been working hard away from the focus of much public speaking for some time, figured it was worth mentioning for those who haven't witnessed it.

Top Top youth coach. The lads would run through brick walls for him.
He is tough but very fair......

One thing for sure is that any lad coming through from this years u18s will want to achieve as much for Travis as themselves...

Good to hear the positive things about Travis Binnion and I hope he is a success.

For now, I'm less than convinced about the academy full stop. This is a league full of young players creating, scoring and bossing games - and some at our club are placing a lot of hope on players like Louis Reed being our future. A player that can't get a regular game and doesn't create, score or defend (part of the blame for this I put on tactics). Any kid with any ounce of ability should walk into the team and not just be on the bench to convince people at the club that the academy is working.

As always - lots of saying and not much doing.

Maybe a little harsh but I understand fully. The academy lads are not the total solution. The fact of the matter is that there is a current group of 17 year olds who have a chance .... God help them if they are chucked in now. They have proved themselves against championship and premiership opposition so far and need to be prepared to push on to first team football. As for the 19 or 20 year old pros, I think it's hard for them to fully show what they can do in an under performing first team ......... I worry that these young lads are seen as the sole answer .

Well done to he lad, always seems to do a great job..hopefully the new Cec Coldwell in the making.
My only concern with the academy lately is that the lads coming through have struggled to make much of an impression in the way Maguire or the Kyle's did coming into the first team..or even some of the Prem/championship loans we see turnout for various teams this season who often stand out...Having said that,I'm not writing them off,and I like the look of Whiteman, and hope him and the likes of DCL can really step it up next season.Sounds like from what KM and Travis were saying at the forum that they're going to get their chance anyway.

Whatever happened to Ron Reed?

Went to Hungary when the Fradi link came about. Blackwell wasn't to happy about being the tea boy at Bury when Ronnie was Warnocks number two (and was glad to see him go) before NW realised KB was more pliant. And knew a lot less.

Haven't seen him for a while but I understand he's happily retired. Top bloke and a gentleman. Had a lot to do with the academy set up that NW claims was down to him. Good old Neil. :)

Ron is 71 now so I'm not surprised he's retired. I knew him in his pre United days, when he combined managing in Non league teams (Stafford Rangers, Boston) with PE teaching at Carter Lodge.

The academy manager role seems to be a step up for Travis, but will he be affecting youngsters' development more or less, compared to being the head coach?

Congratulations, and good luck! It'll be interesting if he spends as much time coaching as he does now

It shouldn't take him away from the coaching because that's where he seems to have excelled. I hope it's not a case of him moving into a less suitable role just because he was the easiest option.

Seems to me after his introduction at the fans forum , the coaching side unfortunately may become secondary , with the bloke becoming a administrator, diplomat, and politician. Watch out Adkins , Travis will be doing the pre and post match RS interviews not long soon.

Whatever happened to Ron Reed?

As others have said Lydon, he moved on, but the reason (to me) seems unclear. Anyway, here is what The Star said back in 2010.........

RON REID has parted company with Sheffield United.

The widely-respected coach, who tranformed Bramall Lane's youth programme into one of the north's most envied academies, performed a variety of roles behind the scenes of the Championship club.

His most recent posting was at Ferencvaros where, together with manager Craig Short, he helped United's Hungarian development partners overcome a turbulent start to the 2009/10 campaign and finish 7th in the Soporoni Liga table.

Reid had been expected to follow Short to Notts County when the former United defender was appointed as Steve Cotterill's successor earlier this summer. But, when a series of events at Meadow Lane made his appointment impossible, Reid returned to South Yorkshire where his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

"I fully enjoyed my work at United and I wish them all the best for the future," Reid told The Star. "It's a smashing club with some smashing people and I had some great times there.

"But now I feel as if the time is right to seek a new challenge elsewhere."

Reid, whose job at Shirecliffe has been filled by John Pemberton, leaves behind a proud track record of achievement.

Forty-two of his graduates, including Nick Montgomery and Stephen Quinn, have gone on to make appearances at Football League and Premiership level while United have banked nearly 20m in fees after selling the likes of Phil Jagielka, Michael Tonge, Kyle Naughton, Jacob Mellis and Kyle Walker. His CV also boasts spells working at both first team and reserve team level before travelling to BudapeReid, who wants to continue his coaching career, added: "Ferencvaros was brilliant. It's certainly made me better at my job because the expectation levels of the supporters out there are something else. The pressure is unbelievable but the fans were great to both Craig and myself.

"Ferencvaros wanted me to stay but I decided to come back here and, after working there, I don't think there's any situation in the game now that I haven't seen or had to handle.

"It's certainly improved me as a coach and widened my knowledge."
