I think if you go back to previouse clough interviews he states that he passes on to Mal Brannigan any targets
he has and once the player has interest in the move to the lane then he is the man to take it forward.
Fingers crossed a few deals are completed in time.

I think if it gets to this time tomorrow and nothing had happened not much will, I expect a lot of our negotiations to be today and concluded in the morning if at all.

I'm expecting some movement.

Just listened to Clough on the radio he said he had tabled four new signings to strengthen the squad and now it was down to the board to sanction them.

So Prince/Kev let's see your commitment.

The board could sanction them but the players might well end up elsewhere. The transfer deadline isn't the time do business unless you're an agent or a player.

Please stick to the topic of the thread and talk about shit please.

Long term loan with a view to perminant signing, thus circumventing the whole deadline day circus and inflation of fees/wages.
As to who, at the risk of being flayed alive (metaphorically) I feel unless the transfer is good enough price wise and wages, I'd forget brayford and concentrate on center defence and a fast striker to compliment higden,
Some have mentioned a winger, personally I think murphy will get back to last seasons form and JCR/Flynn more than good enough to fight for right wing.
Center midfield strong enough, even in depth and ability to change during a game to cope.
So maybe just someone to keep murphy on his toes, but not really necessary .

I'd rather see us not lose any players today e.g. Baxter and Murphy than bring anyone in.

It'll be the usual, people building themselves up into a frenzy throughout the day then accusing the club of lacking ambition when we don't bring in 'marquee' signings.

Bottom line is, whilst we'd always like more quality, is this squad really that far short where bringing no-one in today would be a disaster ?

5 Goals in 5 League games.

This needs addressing, we can't rely on winning 1-0 by scoring first and shutting up shop or pulling one back to draw 1-1.

Baxter won't score worldies every week.

Agree, and it's a strange one given that it's still early doors for Higdon and McNulty.

I don't think we're far off at all.All our players are going to get better, apart from a couple who i'm not going to mention. No major outgoings would keep me more than happy.

The bottom line is that Clough himself has gone on record as saying we are 2 or 3 players short.
He’s told the board who he wants and asked them to back him in trying to sign those players.
He could hardly have made it any clearer what the situation is from his point of view.
Now is the time for “The Powers that be” to show they are serious about backing their manager and getting promotion.

I think we're two quality players off a title challenging team.

Problem is, they're in two of the main positions - central defence and up front.

That in itself though suggests that he's not happy with 2 or 3 of what we presume is his current 1st choice XI. As you say, it looks like a quality CB to partner / bring McGahey on and again, a proven striker. As above, not sure what this says about Higdon and McNulty.

I think it says more about McNulty at his stage. I reckon Clough would like four first choice strikers to choose from and that includes Baxter. Porter was a ridiculous resigning for more you think about it.

He might be thinking Higdon won't fit the bill and Collins still needs replacing ?!

See Cardiff also signing another defender this am.

I have wanted us to sign a left footed winger/wide midfielder for a while. Our 4 wingers (JCR, JM, RF, BD) are all right footed and bar Murphy all have to cut in more often than not when on the left. A genuine left footer could offer something different.

Well we know for a fact that he had lined up the signings of another right back (Freeman) and a pacy striker (Bennett).
Since that deal fell through, we haven't signed anyone for either of those positions so that accounts for 2 of the 3.
He's also on the record as saying that Pearce is a target or he might try and get Maguire back on loan.
So centre-back is clearly the third position he's trying to sign a player for.

Why does he want to sign players for those positions?

1) We only have one specialist right back and he prefers to play Davies further forward.
2) He was forced to sell Maguire and hasn't yet signed a suitable replacement. He didn't sign Collins who is 31 and hasn't yet received a new contract offer. McGahey is only 18 and isn't up to Maguire's level yet. Butler simply hasn't worked out.
3) None of our current four strikers (Higdon, McNulty, Baxter, Porter) has any pace. It's a vital weapon that we're currently missing.

So far, Clough has patiently built a squad consisting players available on free transfers or for small undisclosed fees. What he hasn't been able to sign are proven players who are under contract, playing well and will therefore need to be prised away from their current club.

I get the impression he's challenging the board to go to Leeds and Pearce (for example) and make them both a fair offer that they won't refuse. You know, like what most other clubs do.

Fair points but trouble is, we are League 1 at the end of the day.

I still think the defence will take care of itself with the players we've got in this League given what Clough's shown thus far organisation wise. It's a real game changer we're still missing, dare I say, a Ched who can make a goal out of nothing. Hopefully, Wallace will get up to full fitness and stay there, if not, I'd also be concerned that we need an Alan Judge type playmaker in there.
