History shows that any real progress at BDTBL has been based on a long term working relationship (5+ years) between a very good player and a very good manager. I am thinking of Harris / Currie, Warnock / Jagielka and Bassett / Deane. Each of the managers is regarded as our best and each of the players went on to play for England.
Either the players make the manager or vice-versa. Or a bit of both. There is probably no definitive answer.
Five years ago Kyle Walker gave me hope that another key combination may emerge but Kevin Blackwell was never in the frame for me. Also, in this day and age, it is very difficult to retain a good player for 5 years.
Promotion is both realistic and essential this season. For longer term progress, history shows that the emergence of another key combination is also essential.
