well, i've been meaning to have a bit of a dig around for sometime since i first joined this forum after our Cup game last November... and here it is, my little contribution to add to a lot of the amazing and fascinating historical picture threads put up by all you wonderful souls on here :)

(thanks to Julian Pugh the WCFC historian for these pics)

P.S..... was anyone there who remembers it from S24SU??

Are you sure it's not some of our fans trying to nick them JR?!

yes yes! hehe to go with the pitch covers from Rochdale and air con from Donny...do you reckon its McCabes brainwave to building a new stadium on the cheap?! He was plotting it from way back in '59!

November 1951 we first installed lights...according to our history book it says we were the first in the midlands area to install them!!

a bit strange how the Blades did that floodlight experiment match wayyyyy before in 1878 and it was deemed a success yet the FA didnt see it as something to implement across the country/league in competitive matches bar the odd exhibition game till the middle of 1951!

Not that strange when you consider how the FA was and is run.

Ha true! Always 50 years behind the times!

Excellent stuff JWCFC.

Thanks for putting this up.

:) thank you.. I wish i could find more..it was our biggest ever game there after all and there was 4200 Blades fans there at least (they say a good 2-3000 others managed to sneak in for the game by getting in at the canal end and the brookside of the ground so probably a few Blades extra)!!

I know BDTBL was famous for it staging cricket before the football hooligans finally chased theose of a leather and willow persuasion away... But there was even the odd game played down here, a floodlit one which was the 3rd one played in the world ever!

Ted Hemsley played for Worcesteshire as well as the Blades. I believe a few Pro footballers also played Pro Cricket bitd . Latterly Botham, Arnie Sidebottom (Man Utd and Yorks).

Chris Balderstone ? I think he scored the first goal I ever saw Sheff Utd v Carlisle 1971 2-2 and played for Leicestershire.
Yes, he scored their first goal after we were winning 2-0. Stan Ternent got the equaliser. Balderstone also played for Carlisle when they beat us 2-1 in the FA Cup in 1973

Dearden got the first chipping it over the keeper and a Tudor header made it 2-0. Just checked the team ,didn't realise Heaton played at left back.

Jim Cumbes also played for the City between 78-82...bit of a legend and played a big part in the great Cup runs we had around that time as well, particularly when we stuffed Malcolm Allisons Plymouth side!!

As did Phil Neale of Lincoln City and Jim Standen of West Ham.

Phil Neale also played for the City!! And he taught at my school as well as doing cricket with us, we used to have cricket nets at lunchtimes with him ,Tim Curtis and Martin Horton bowling, i remember the one time he bowled me a pretty nasty loopy leg spinner and i played a forward defensive shot and it came up off the bat and clocked me under the chin!! Thankfully i was fine and he was straight upto me to check if i was okay, one of the nicest blokes going!!

My Grandad and Dad both attended our fixture in 1959, both born in Sheffield, both Blades.
l was born near Worcester and have been a Blade for over 40 years and l watched Worcester City many times over the years and always took pride in seeing our mention in the program of the record crowd 17,042.
l achieved my ambition of seeing the Blades play City as part of Sam Wedgburys transfer deal.
At the final game played at St Georges Lane v Chester City l wore my Sheffield United shirt with pride as a tribute.
The circle was complete when l attended the FA Cup fixture at Bramall Lane last season another proud day.
May City soon return home to a new ground in Worcester.
Up The Blades !

Remember going to see a cricket match at The Lane as a kid just because Balderstone was playing.

Playing both sports back then made him some sort of superman in my eyes.

Him and Ted were very special sportsman.

I like that kind of lineage going on there Rod :) and a proud traditionalist too!

Monday night games down the Lane were always pretty 'magical' under those big old lights.. The most special one in recent times was that 3-2 humdinger vs Accrington in the 1st round replay coming back from 2 down inside 12 minutes, and of course young Sam Wedgbury was making a name for himself, he usurped Andy Awford out of the record books at the time for being the youngest player to appear in a Cup game if i remember correctly?!

Did your dad and grandad recall any little anecdotes or stories from the '59 game?
