What are his attributes? I am struggling to see any, with the only positive people seem to have are that he's quite tall. This is not much use when he doesn't jump for a header. His technique is poor, his tackling is invariably late and his pace; slow. It's been difficult to tell what midfield role he has been asked to fulfil so far. He just doesn't get involved.

I would like to see the highly rated injured feller from Tranmere tried in his place as soon as he's fit. As far as I can see, Basham offers nothing. I have forgotten he's been playing for very lengthy spells in both of the games I've seen him in so far.

Am I missing something?

By the way, this isn't scapegoating. I just think he's looked awful whether we've won or lost.

^^^^^^ What he says. He never stopped running today. I think he is the box to box midfielder we need. ^^^^^

Though he had a decent game...someone called him 'the new Monty'

I hope so!

Not been impressed with Basham thus far, but he does makes some decent runs (into space, not dribbling past people), without much end product. Put 3 over the bar Tuesday night, today failed to get in decent crosses after getting into the right areas.

Monty used to do the same with woeful shots, crosses, passes, etc. The defensive side of Monty's game was excellent though, which I haven't seen with Basham yet.

Yes, plenty: great engine; won more tackles than anyone else today, several defensive headers and distribution was generally good. I had him as our best player in the first half, though he was quieter in the second.

you missed nothing - Basham is a decent box to box player - gets a tackle in, wins the ball and seems to stay on his feet.
makes late runs into the box.

Some people can't see a good footballer.

He will be 2nd on the team sheet after Davies and will be third on the team sheet once Wallace gets fit.

Some intelligent runs from him today too, completely ignored most of the time.

Yes, his main attacking task seems to be getting in the box when the crosses are coming in. A bit more here: http://scandinavianblades.webs.com/apps/blog/entries/show/42567146-chris-basham

Our formation has changed since this was written, but Basham's role seems to have stayed pretty much the same.

Old and redundant ground I know, but I can't help it.

Montgomery's defensive contribution was to give the other side constantly renewed possession. He very rarely won the ball cleanly and, on the odd occasion he did, would deliver it back to the opposition immediately. He specialised in conceding throw-ins, corners and, most damagingly, free-kicks on the edge of the area, not to mention countless penalties.

He was, and is, utter and complete garbage. I won't call him a twat (he wasn't) but he was the living, breathing epitome of "talentless". The very embodiment of non-football. We should have run him out of town ten years ago.

One of our best players today.

Awkward to play against, not afraid to put his foot or head in, and a midfielder that actually goes beyond our front players and makes intelligent runs.

Go then, I'll bite...old ground, like you say and I agree with much you wrote, used to make me chuckle at times with some of the stuff he did...but, the harassing, non-stop engine part of his game seemed to be essential to Warnock's team's and that team often looked weaker without him...an 'enigma' certainly!

Seems like he is getting better slowly but surely.

I think he will be back up when Wallace returns.

I have said all along that the true Basham will be seen once Wallace is established in the team. I have to keep saying it, but Wallace alongside Basham will be the preferred middle 2 for Clough. Coady did the box-to-box role last season (eventually) and Basham will take that role as Fulwood Blade has noticed . As for Wallace, he can dig and keep shape as needed (the Doyle role) but I reckon you need to think more in terms of the quarter-back type role. He can pick a pass!

Warnock got us to the Premier League with 10 men every week?

A true legend, no?

I know its still early days, but I think he's a shocking player, can't understand how he keeps on the field, gives the ball away far too many times, I recall a few times he had plenty of time to head the ball to one of our players or control it and he just ended up mindlessly heading it straight to a Crawley player in front of him, he can't tackle, does get in the box the odd time which is good but had a very weak attempt when found with the ball in the box. He's tall but can't win anything in the air and just all round very poor, I can understand why Blackpool have been poor lately if they had him in midfield. he's been our worst player in both home games imo.

117 league games since 2006, 5 goals. He's a defender trying to make his way in midfield.

That's not many games and very few goals. He's not anything special, don't wish for more than you wll get.

It is quite clear that some fans do not understand the Clough philosophy of how he sees the game played. He keeps telling people but I guess some are just not listening.

It is as follows:

You play a very tight. boring game of football - you do not concede, meaning you don't lose the game.
You try and score a goal and then in effect stop the opposition scoring.

If you do go a goal down, you try and not concede another, whilst at the same time try and equalise.

That is the Clough way - we won't win games 4 nil - if we get to 2 nil it's shut shop time.

As for Basham, I'd get used to him as he is one of the first on the team sheet.

Basham has got no chance with our fans I'm afraid, Higdon could start scoring goals and all will be forgotten, but the style of player Basham is he's doomed to be our scapegoat as long as he's here. Thought he was fine yesterday myself, especially for a new signing, same with the Bristol game.

Didn't Nigel's Derby run up some high scores? Do I not recall a 5-1 at Millwall under him last season, for example?

I'm not a great keeper of records so it's a genuine question!

Some players are just very poor. Montgomery, for example. If people quite legitimately point that out it's all too easy to cry 'scapegoat'.

Ah Monty - a player that everyone knew was crap at football. Except all the managers who watched him play day in day out of course :)

He has most of the things that a defensive midfield player should have and he also makes some runs into the opponents box as well.
When Wallace is fit I believe that we will see Wallace & Basham in midfield and Doyle dropped again. For those posters who thought Basham was poor yesterday; he was a world beater compared to Doyle. Unfortunately though, this is what we get in the 3rd Division !!!

I thought he got better as the game went on. Like the OP I don't know what his best attribute is but seems to be ok at most things.

Has Doyle got away with another game where he gave the ball away cheaply time and time again?

Stop bashing Basham! Give him a chance and let Clough bring out the best in him. Remember what happened with Coady. He came on in leaps and bounds after playing under NC but it was not immediate. The team is still settling down and getting to know each other's games. I am willing to bet that Bash will become a very good player for us and an automatic name on the team sheet as he settles in.

I thought he was poor against Bristol but much improved last Saturday. Is he perfect? No. Are we a Third Division team? Yes.
