Where are the days where we had ballboys who would actually look to go and get the ball and keep the game moving at a reasonable speed. I appreciate giving kids a turn is a nice idea but with the way we play at the minute, the constant slowing down of games at home with players having to go and fetch the ball themselves does not favour us!

In fairness to Saturdays Ball Boys, it looked like nearly all of them would struggle to get over the advertising boards! I can remember a couple of occasions where they had to run from nearly the half way line down to the gap by the corner flag!

I had a similar thought, the ball rolled along the sideline on the JS side and the Blade player was in a hurry to get it (can't remember who it was), but the very same thought occurred to me, why has the ballboy not run to get and throw it to the player (or amble across and throw it badly to the opposition. I put it down to the commercialisation of football. So much room needed for advertising hoardings that they can't have gaps for the little fellas to get through. Come the Revolution!!

I was a ball boy for a Central League game against Blackburn Rovers sometime in the mid 1960's. I spent most of the game chasing the bloody ball across the cricket pitch up to the old Pavilion.
Players such as Roy Ridge who was a permenant reserve continually over hit long ball passes. I was knackered and only did it the one time.

Today's youngsters. Don't know they're born.

What's happened to the multi-ball system?
An excellent invention.
We probably lose 5 - 10 minutes per game chasing down the ball for throw-ins and opposition goal kicks.

I'm sure i heard somewhere that the football league scrapped the multi ball system as a money saving measure

Wonder how they would have done at the cricket pitch side when it was a three-sided ground. :p

My only claim to fame is that i was one of the ball boys covering the cricket pitch . Used to get a bollocking if i got the ball back too slow if we were losing , and a bollocking if i got the ball back too quick if we were winning.

My little 'un was one of the ball boys on saturday......I've gone and told him it was all his fault....

Forget the fact that we look like we did under David Weir, forget that we look like a team where the players have realised that if we do get promoted, most of them will be looking for a new job, forget the fact that we can't take a decent corner, forget the fact that we are obsessed with short side way free kicks when in the opposition half, only to then lose it immediately, forget the fact that we have one of the division's best attackers sitting on the bench, and when he does make it on we expect him to chase long aimless passes in the channels. Forget that Murphy was playing so deep on saturday we almost had a back five. Forget the fact that both goals were poor defending. Forget the fact that one of the few players who actually looks bothered, (the captain) can't get in the starting line-up Admittingly, the pitch is poor, ...........but I know lets just blame the ball boys.

Hope he went to bed with no tea again tonight pal? :)

You punishing him further and making him go to Oakwell? I'll make sure I boo him.

Yes, its all his fault. Hanging's too good for him. Its off to Oakwell we go.

Why don't we put the ball boys on the pitch and let the players fetch the ball

I thought we already had them playing in midfield :p

Oakwell isn't enough, Donny game as well and no telly till the Blades win. That'll learn him :p

Aye, I did it as a one off guest ball boy ( bit like being a mascot in those days) in about 1964, versus Huddersfield and the one snippet I remember was it was Tom Fenoughtys debut in a Blades shirt, amazing stuff eh! :)

Most of the usual Ball-Boys are away with the club in Norway. I assume as a one-off on Saturday the lads were U11's.
Ah so we can blame Bergen Blade. Some of his after match picture analysis on the positional sense of the ball boys may be appropriate.
Training sessions with the title of: Collecting the ball under pressure, Retrieving a bouncing ball, Passing the ball back to an awaiting player (including knocking the photographers hat off), may help.

Reserves match?

This reminds me of when Jimmy Hill attributed a late goal for Liverpool at Blackburn in the Cup to a ball girl throwing the ball back quickly, in effect blaming her for denying her team a win. A bit of a shithouse trick if you ask me...

I was there for a full season , all i can remember is we beat Spurs , and drew with Wednesday . Cannot remember the year but mid sixties.

Mr Harris was a gentleman , and had the pleasure of serving him his tea and biscuits at half time . He aways had the same jacket , shirt and tie on . Must have been a superstition or something like that.

That would be 1962/63. We beat Spurs 3-1 (Hodgson, Allchurch and Kettleborough) in Sept and 2-2 against Wendy in October (G.Shaw (pen) and Pace). The West Ham match in February (lost 2-0) was played in freezing conditions and the pitch was in a bad condition. Must be very cold for you?

Anyone remember those maroon track suit tops the Ball Boys used to wear..I remember having one when I was a kid before the time you could buy replica United shirts..I could never understand why they were maroon and not a proper red though.

It's where the row z quote started :D
