If we don't go up in the play-offs then Clough has to go. It's absolutely criminal that we have gone all season without two proper centre halves. It's all right him trying to play it cagey and it worked a treat last season with a rock solid defence built around Maguire and Collins but this season has been a joke that we've filled in with an array of full backs, midfield players or young uns.

Heard Giddins (think it was Giddins) on Praise and Grumble after the game trying to defend Clough to one caller over centre halves. Giddins reeled off a number of full backs, midfield players or young uns that can play centre half. He seemed oblivious to that being the very problem, he even seemed pleased with himself that he could list all these players that can play 'centre half', unfortunately they're all stand ins and are the very reason we've let soft goals in all season.

Two natural centre halves and we'd have walked this division, Clough's not even got the excuse that he didn't have the money to bring them in. Sorry if you can't see that as a problem and in a key area of the park, then you don't deserve to be a manager anywhere Mr Clough.

NC will put it right..............................won't he..............................hopefully.............?

Heard that bloke with Giddins , and the bloke had him over a barrel . Clough also to me sounds as disenchanted , and flat as us fans , which is not a good sign . He knows the problem but would give the same answers as Giddins did to the bloke on RS .

Unfortunately as we are devoid of ideas and CB players , it may cost us this season .Its even worst , when you know the problem and solution , but done nowt about it . Missed opportunity may be on the cards if Clough and the players don't pull something out of the hat.

For the sake of putting the counter point, what will we think if we get promoted without a decent pair of centre halves? Sure, we should have had em in the first place but if we achieve the end result despite this.....?

It's all well and good saying we should have had em and if we don't go up Clough's to blame, but if we don't have em and do go up who should we praise?

Probably the one area were Nigel cannot escape taking full responsibility. As far back as October he decided that Collins and Butler were not going to play for whatever reason and has done absolutely nothing to bring in replacements. Instead he has decided to cover using a RB, LB, CM and 2 youngsters one who is ok but injured more often than not and the other not good enough to hold a place down at Tranmere.

The CH needs addressing. I'd like to hear a response to that. But as with the forwards maybe there were targets, maybe things didn't work out as planned. We decided to reallocate resources we already had rather than risking money elsewhere.

A judgement call.

I ll be the first on here to praise.. I hope (and suspect many others feel the same) that I will have to eat some of my words
but I don't think it will happen now.. it will be Yeovil all over again I'm afraid

Could be a bad judgement call if we don't get promoted, don't you think?

Agree with that. And while I can fully appreciate the amount of competition there is to sign any half-decent forward, the prospect of getting in someone to lead the defence should have been relatively easier (and cheaper) to fix. It's as though because the McCarthy loan didn't work out he was put off completely from risking anyone else new to the squad this season.

If NC could with the benefit of hindsight start this season over again, I'm sure he'd have done plenty of things differently - having a stable centre-half pairing to last all-season would no doubt be high up there.

I know what I'll be thinking, "we got away with that", or should I say Clough got away with it.

Strong spine, strong back line, square pegs in square holes and teams don't go far wrong. Clough's United has a weak spine, weak back line and square pegs in round holes all over the park. If we do go up it will be in spite of the manager, not because of him.

Pure fluke if we do go up without centre halves.

I think you can guess how far we would get in the Championship playing a right back and midfielder at centre half.

Honestly im not sure why people keep banging on about CH's if we play basham and mcevelely there, there as good as any in this division.

No. Because we can't get in a Tardis to a parallel universe where we spend on a CH or two and then don't get one or more of Done, Davies, the Beard, or Holt and his goals, we drift out of the play-offs, and this forum goes nuts at Clough for that.

I think McEveley is poor and has been at fault for a number of goals - though he is out of position.

And Basham brings much more to midfield. It's not that he's a poor CH it's just that we're generally a much better team with a specialist CH and Basham in midfield.

This is the situation we have left ourselves in. Would you prefer McEverley alongside say Brayford athe back allowing Basham to add more energy to the midfield, or do you want a midfield of Doyle, Coutts and Baxter who couldn't run past their gran.

Funny that, I thought we weren't walking the league because we were lacking a proper striker.

I dissagree completely about mceveley i was as aprehensive as most about signing him but up until january i thought he was our BEST signing of the season absolute rock at the back and a bit of skill and natural footballing ability to boot . I honestly think people have been getting on his back since the handball against spurs and wont forgive him . I do agree basham is probebly more usefull in midfield though but he's a good CH at this level i dont think youl get much better same with mceveley . Although my preffered selection would be kennedy(if he can stay fit) and mceveley at the back with bash in the middle
I also think mcevely is a better centre half than he is a full back
