Friday night saw the beginning of the Sheffield United first team pre-season schedule with a familiar trip to Braken Moor to take on Stocksbridge Park Steels. Usually a near capacity crowd, the Blades have scored a number of goals in recent years against the welcoming non-league opponents in what is a great location for summer football. This year was to be no different, with five United goals, four different scorers and a selection of chances that really should have seen the visitors finish further in front. 1324 shunned the Brazil v. Belgium clash (though to be fair, a proportion of mobile…

With the Blades only returning to begin their gruelling pre-season schedule earlier this week, it’s been nice to have some football in the World Cup to concentrate on rather than the usual close season boredom of car washing, gardening and shopping. England being a different animal under Gareth Southgate, looking to play a different way with youth being one of the talking points, rather than the same ageing and under-performing “names” – there’s added interest for United fans, with no fewer than three ex-Blades in the England squad. One of the three, of course, was only on loan for a…

Sheffield United assistant manager Alan Knill oversaw a Blades XI slip to a defeat at a rainy Causeway Lane on Wednesday night. In front of 309 (plus 2 dogs and S2 Jnr in a baby sling) spectators, it was proven that contrary to all known evidence, it is possible for Jake Wright (Snr) to be on the losing side after 90 minutes of football. Attacking the open cricket pitch end first half, it was the Blades who had the ball in the back of the net first, after Regan Slater’s long range effort was blocked. Unfortunately, Jake Wright (Jnr)’s effort was…

After ten long years outside of their home town, the phoenix club Scarborough Athletic returned on Saturday, officially opening the new Flamingo Land Stadium at Scarborough Sports Village with a friendly against Sheffield United U23s. A sell out crowd of 2038 looked on as the young Blades – in true party pooper fashion – ran out comfortable winners over the Seadogs. The game got under way after a moment on the PA system by Blades co-owner Kevin McCabe, a Scarborough resident and a guard of honour by the seaside club’s various youth sides. The United side looked more comfortable with…

The Blades first team were victorious in their second fixture of their pre-season programme on Friday, beating Málaga CF at the Estadio Jose Burgos Quintana Stadium in Coin, Malaga. Following a week of warm weather preparations and an open training session attended by travelling Blades, a goal from JOHN FLECK was enough to give Chris Wilder’s side the win. Moving onto a pass from Samir Carruthers, the midfielder took the ball towards the penalty area and as the defenders backed off, placed a left footed effort beyond the helpless Málaga keeper from 18 yards. Captain Billy Sharp had a couple…

A Blades XI compromising of members of the U23/Development squad played Sheffield FC at the Coach and Horses on a rainy Tuesday night, watched by 311 supporters. With a run out for Kieran Wallace confirming he was still at the club, the Blades named four “trialists” – though one of those did look mightily familiar – and gave plenty of the 22 players who travelled a run out. It was a first half Jordan Doherty header that separated the sides, the Republic of Ireland Youth International nodding past the helpless Chris Butt in the Sheffield FC goal. The Blades would…

It was recently announced that the the official professional ball of the English Football League for the coming 2017/18 season would be the Mitre Delta Hyperseam. The cynical football fan would be forgiven for skipping over the press release, in a modern football world full of branding, relentless advertising, sponsorship and forever redesigned corporate logos. The Mitre brand however, is one that for some, invokes memories of a simpler time, a time when as a child you unwrapped the obviously shaped present under the tree, sniffed in that unmistakable newly manufactured aroma and couldn’t wait to rush off with your…
